June 2005 Spotlight On...
BRITTA
COLEMAN
by Sheniqua Waters
Britta
Coleman was not born in Texas. But, she moved here as soon
as she could. Since moving to Texas she has experienced several
significant moments in her life. She has met her soul mate, seen her
children baptized, joined NT and has had the thrill of having her debut
book published in hardcover with Warner Books. Before moving to Texas she lived in Oregon, California, Idaho and Ohio. When she was young she
enjoyed swimming, playing yard games with friends, participating in
Monopoly tournaments with her sisters and going to the beach. However,
she liked reading most of all. She read constantly and often got into
trouble for staying up past her bedtime to read with a flashlight.
Near
graduation from college, she met an interesting fellow who took her
dancing. After doing the two step and talking for hours about books,
Britta found out that he loved Larry McMurty’s Lonesome Dove - - that
piqued her interest because Lonesome Dove was one of her favorite books.
She realized he was a wonderful guy. Then, one cold December day, he
showed her just how wonderful he thought she was when he showed up at her
apartment with an engagement ring. The two were married and now Britta
has two children who are voracious readers like their mother.
Throughout
the changes in her life, Britta never forgot her love for books. She
continued to read several books a month from mainstream fiction to
romances to mysteries. Being an avid reader led her to want to write her
own stories. Five years ago she wrote her first nonfiction piece, a
parenting column for the Amarillo Globe-News, which she still writes.
Eventually, she began writing fiction stories about quirky small towns
and even quirkier characters. She has a book called Potter Springs that
debuted June 16, 2005. Potter Springs, a story
about star-crossed newlyweds on the road to redemption, received 4 ½
stars from Romantic Times for its engrossing dialogue and deft touches of
humor. The book took about a year to write, a year to polish and another
year with an agent before it sold. In 2002, Britta won Best Mainstream
Novel in the Frontiers in Writing Contest for an early version of Potter Springs.
Britta Coleman joined NT in 2004 right after her novel
sold. Since then the people of NT have been an incredible support to her. Britta
states what she has found at NT has not only assisted her career, but it
has also encouraged her as an artist and as a person.
